A longstanding client.
Callaghan Innovation (formerly Industrial Research) had been working on development of high temperature superconductor material for some time. But to use the material in practice they needed a way to cut a 2mm wide shaped strip out of 0.15mm thick flat cable strand with minimal metal deformation along the cut edges. The “weave” they developed was difficult to cut precisely – lasers left slag, saws left burrs. The laminate material – is a combination of several different layers.
We created an innovative press tool that cut through the material with absolute precision.
The initial unit was very successful and is being followed by a second version after the cable design was recently improved.
